Project
My focus for the project was the Music and Dance culture in Honnavar. I want to bring out the rich culture of music in a form of a short film. I want to string different songs for different occasion together. So that one song leads to another making the viewer able to connect it into a single story. The film would not have any characters but it will be symbolically connected to the song. The songs will narrate the story of the movie. It is going to be on how there are different life phases in a girls life. At the end I wish to bring across a particular aspect of their music, which is, there is a peculiar melancholy in most of their songs. It may be a happy song but still the tune remains melancholic. This is a small effort to bring across the message of how people of Honnavar have strung their life around these songs, how they have made even their daily problem into something they sing about ( and how their are melodies which are hard to understand).

Trip To Honnavar
The four day trip to Honnavar was an unforgettable experience. The small place Honnavar is surrounded with many small islands. Each island having different tribes and cultures. it is situated in the west coast of Karnataka.
It has a very diverse and rich culture.
1st Day
We started our day with the typical food and specialties like "kotte rotti" (idlis prepared in the jack fruit leaf). We saw the local artist Hanumi (from the gomakkul community) working on her paintings called "shedi kale" which is done by special brushes made out of betelnut's shell. They colors used are made naturally with laterite stones etc.
We visited "Mavinkurve" one of the islands, where we learnt the art of making grass mats and also tried making it ourselves. We tried many herbal local drinks.(There are more than 60 herbal drinks made there)
2nd Day
We visited another island called "Salvador mane". We observed that here there was a lot of influence of christanity.
The main occupation of most of the people here is making choir.
The decay the coconut husk in the soil under water for min 9months. after that it is dug out, peel apart, and beaten with a wooden tool to fiber. Further it was made in to a rope.
We again visited Mavinkurve where we went to a different part of it this time. We came across many shops still using the old heavy locks, we met few more people. We came across a lady who sang for us, told us about different songs they sing in different occasions, different attire, sarees, jewellery etc.
In the evening we met women from Halakki tribe, Sukri and Nugli. These women have still kept their culture of wearing many strings around their neck, wearing the typical styled saree etc.
We saw them dancing, singing, and had a chat with them about their different culture, attire, occasions etc.
3rd Day
We went to visit the Honnavar Halakki tribe. We could see many differences between the Ankola Halakki tribe and the Honnava Halakki tribe. In the way they dress their general attitude etc.
4th Day
We had got all the materials and information we wanted, we finished of with whatever we needed more. And at the end we relaxed at the beach!
It has a very diverse and rich culture.

4. What are its advantages over plain interviews.
Interviews only give you quantitative data. Through role play you get a qualitative research and can understand many simple things and problem one can miss out in an interview.
5. What is ergonomics?
It is the relation of person with its working tool. It includes the way the tools are used, kept, how much strength one uses while working, what are the body actions happening while working etc.
6. How is it a research tool?

It lets you know better about the area of work, how and what exact setting can be done for the most comfort and efficient work.
8. What is a scenario or persona, what are the advantages of creating them?
A scenario is when you write a screenplay around a person, using its maximum information from real life. While creating different scenarios you actually think of the different situation that person can get in to, different problems one can face, and what solution he might take while in that problem. All the action set is from the point of view of the person we are writing about. The plot is written using the actual possible people around him. Or if someone imaginary is created, it is created with extreme detail.
9. What are the advantages of a matrix as a research tool?
It lets you know about all the criteria u think while buying or creating a product.

11. Give two examples of second level understandings from Marasandra village based on your own reflective judgement.
The setting of the village is in a specific manner. At one side there are small shacks. Then small pakka houses. And the other side there are bigger concrete houses. The potters live in one area and the others working in shops and factories in the other.
12. Give two examples of design interventions that you can do based on this 2 weeks of research.
1) After an in depth research we can come up with a book giving information or can work on a movie which brings out important information about the subject.
2) after a detailed research we can try and design a better setting or product for those people.

Choices Of Bags
*Reflective statement- even at the time of buying a simple thing like bag, there are so many aspects which influences our choice.
Marasandra 3rd day
We went in the evening at around 7 pm. The scene at this hour was quite different from the previous two days. It was dark and not much light was there in the village. The houses were well lit but there were no street lights.
They were not much people outside. Only the area where there are big concrete houses had 3-4 street lights, the other portion did not have any street light pole. After a little talking to someone living there we got to know that they tend to stay inside after its dark as there is no street light. And they do get electricity poles, but only during elections.
Almost every house there had an access to t.v. and cable. They had pulled wires from various electricity poles and were able to light there houses through them.
*Reflective statement- Their time of the day is resticted. They have to finish all the outside work before it gets dark, not by choice but by compulsion.

Marasandra 2nd day
We tried to map the whole village. We started together as a group of 11 and further split at a point in different directions. We had small conversation with people. Set few landmarks, to make it easy to read the map. After a while, we combine the two maps of different direction together and made it into one final map of the village. In which we tried and mark all the important places, houses, land marks, shops etc.
We also gave paper and pen to a person living there, and told him to try and draw the village map according to him. But could not find him afterwards to collect the map.
*Reflective statement- How the whole setting is according to different professions of the people there and also according to their houses.

Report- Marasandra
We went to the village at around 1 in the afternoon. We started with the first house where there was a man working on a potters wheel. We had a small conversation with him. We had a problem conversing with him as he was unable to understand hindi and we din't know kannada.
We observed him while he was working on the wheel, making pots, joining the base of the pots etc.
Further we went inside the village and mat other potters working on the ganpati statues. We observed how they worked on th idols and asked about how they make it, in how much time etc.
They usually make the body of the idol first by setting the clay in the molds. After that the make the head and attach it to the body they previously made. They make around 10 complete idols in 2 days.
We went and explored further, saw a vineyard and people working there.
We saw how the village was geographically set up etc.
*Reflective statement- I observed the setting of the village, how at a particular area all the potters lived, then the iron casting, the other portion had much more concrete houses with people probably earning more than the potters. small shops and P.C.O. , small temple etc.

Ergonomics 17-07-2010
Ergonomics is the science related to man and his work. Example safe lifting techniques, proper posture, appropriate seating position and adaptive equipments.
I tried and measured his tools like the knife, coconuts in relation to his hand, cart, chair etc.
I observed the way he cuts the coconut so perfectly that after three chops there is a hole in the middle and how he uses the same knife in different position to do different work.
Report 16-07-2010
I presented both the scenarios through enactment.
Scenario on Juice owner-
I am Rokesh, a juice shop owner.
Ravi my elder brother suddenly decided to get married . And now he wants the house our father had left both us, in which we are staying at present.
As the house is a one bedroom flat, Ravi wants me to move out of this house and take a new house on rent for myself. But I am not prepared for an expense like that.
After a lot of arguments and fights I have filed a case against him..
As by court's order, none of us got the possession till the matter was sought-ed in the court.
Gradually over the time I confronted a financial problem as i had been paying rents for my house along with my shop rent, my 3 workers' payments and the additional lawyers fee.
Because of all these expenditures I could not spend any money on repairing my old tools (juicers) which was giving me problem.I have Only one worker now, Mahesh. But have more work to do.
One day an ex-Srishti College student came to my shop to have my special Mango chunk juice. while drinking the juice, she found a piece of broken blade. It was a nightmare for me.
She threatened to sue me...
I am going through the worst phase of my life.
I am in-
Legal crises(property)
Financial crises(2 rents)
Legal crises(case against me by my customer)
Scenario on Coconut seller-
I am Chandragode, a coconut seller.
My wife Lakshmi wants to go to her mother's house (Mysore) to visit her aunt Jaanaki amma who has come for a holiday there. And she wants to take saaris and sweets, as she wants to show Jaanaki amma that we earn enough money to afford all this. Which is not the truth.
So now I had to give Lakshmi all the saved money i had and take care of my 2 sons Raghu and Subbu.
And top of all this, there are Riots in Mysore which has made my Coconut supply hamper. There won't be any supply for 2weeks.
All my savings for the week and the extra sum was spent on Jaanaki amma's saaris and sweets and the travelling expense of my wife. I have to make sure to feed my sons everyday. And now even Lakshmi is stuck in Mysore.
I have no coconut to sell and no money to buy more coconuts from the local dealers.
I am in a financial crises.

Ex. 1- To Earn Rs100 Using Innovative/Creative Thinking.
We brainstormed together as a group about how can we earn a profit of Rs.100 by doing an innovative small business. something which did not take much time and could be done in a day. also in which we do not invest much and yet earn a profit of Rs. 100 each.
We came across many ideas like, street performance, selling paper bags, handicrafts, plants, car wash, selling paintings, hair braiding, palm reading, nail art etc.
Amongst our final ideas were a food stall or lime juice stall. But we did not find it innovative enough so after giving it a little more thought on how can we make it creative we came down to our final idea of "Gift A Juice".
We made personalised tags with different quotes and messages and attached it to different glasses, in which we would serve the juice. So the whole concept was to buy a glass with a personalised tag to gift some one. The tags had quotes like Best Friend, Have A Nice Day, For A Smile, Hugs, Peachaan Kaun?, Burp, Chill Maadi,I am Awesome etc. The cost of each glass was decided to be Rs.10 .
We thought of lime juice but with taking care of the investment cost we changed it to buying 'tang'. Our investment was Rs.200 and we aimed for earning Rs.500 but we sold all the glasses and earned a profit of Rs. 110 per head.
